Italy

I had just gone to see the movie “Sex In The City” where all the girls had just been flown to a foreign country for an exotic vacation.

The next morning I got a call from one of my clients, Krista Marie, an up and coming music artist, and she asked me if she could fly me (and my better half) to Italy for a week to photograph her wedding. I was soo excited!! Wow, Krista a celebrity and Marc, a big time music manager (Big and Rich to name a few) wanted me…..Erin McCaffrey…. to photograph the most special day of their lives! I was thrilled and honored!! So,..I started planning and packing for the up coming trip. I had been working my tail off for the past year so a trip was something I really needed!

All was going well, I'd packed all of my equipment and all of my cute new summer, strappy dresses, ( I had shopped for weeks getting the perfect outfits for the Amalfi coast.) Everything seemed perfect, except for a few mosquito bites on my arms from the last evening shoot I did. A few mosquito bites. No big deal. Or so I thought.

I was all cozied in on the plane headed for Rome, with a glass of wine and the movie “When In Rome”. I was smiling in anticipation of this wonderful adventure. Then, glancing down to check my arms where the mosquito bites were, it seemed to me that they were multiplying. No, I thought, that could not be! It must be my imagination. Then I felt some itchy spots around my jaw line …………and then…., I saw several tiny bumps crawling up to my cheeks. All of a sudden I felt my body begin to itch all over and I started freaking out. I went to the back of the plane to ask the flight attendant if she knew what could be going on. Did she have any Benadryl, did I have an allergy? To my horror the attendant informed me that she believed I had poison ivy!! What ? Poison ivy? Oh no, I'm thinking, …..I am going to a foreign country with this $%^& spreading on my body! I started to cry in front of the flight attendant and I was instantly in hell.

And the hell continued. When we arrived in Naples, I waited at the baggage claim and yes,…...more hell,….. no bags. They were left in Rome. Great! Poison ivy on my face and body, no clothes (people had been known to not get their bags for a week!)….. more tears!! I was beyond depressed and full of anxiety as I climbed into the cab that was going to take us from Naples to Amalfi. I now know first hand about Italians being crazy drivers. It was extremely dangerous and my stomach was doing flips, omg....I thought, I might “hurl”……

I tried to communicate with the cab driver to take me to a pharmacy. Unfortunately the pharmacy didn’t understand calamine lotion, but they sold me some steroid cream that did not do much good. I was really worried. What if my face got worse? I did not want to freak out the bride and all the guests. Was poison ivy contagious? Oh lord! Why me???

I knew I had to do something. I couldn’t just wait and see what the cream would do. So I got another expensive, dangerous cab ride to the hospital. I flew in the door, started talking a mile a minute to the doctor, telling him the whole story, “ Ok, I am a photographer from the US and I was doing a session in a field……..how long will this take to go away????…….The doctor looked totally confused, finally, I said……………….”poison ivy'? He got out a really big fat needle…………I closed my eyes and……… ouch! Whew! Is it over??? I left the hospital praying that my face would clear up and I would get my luggage!!!! Please God!!

Well, my face cleared up pretty well in a day, at least I could cover it with makeup. It never cleared up on my arms though ( in fact, it spread to my stomach and legs) but thank goodness it was not visible on my face!!

Oh, and my bags arrived the next day. Yeah!

Although my trip started out a little rocky, it ended up fantastic!! Ok---now can we talk about the amazing wedding. Marc Oswald and Krista Marie, were married in the garden of the Hotel Santa Caterina, a luxurious five star hotel. The bride was gorgeous in a stunning RED gown, and the groom wore flip flops and a white linen suit. Sooo Hollywood! The reception dinner consisted of five sumptuous courses and the wine poured freely! I was in culinary heaven! The reception was on a private yacht where there were Nashville musicians playing great music, great deserts, fabulous drinks and interesting people. Oh, I forgot to mention, the night before the wedding Krista and Marc hosted a party on the yacht, with again, great food, drinks, and entertainment. Also, all the women were treated to a ladies spa night, where we had mani's, pedi's, facials and massages under the moonlight on the yacht, on the Mediterranean sea. It was amazing! What a fabulous night.

The trip was truly a blessing. The wedding was incredible. Amalfi was breathtaking. For the next few days we enjoyed our room with a spectacular view, and breakfast on the terrace, ….....and romantic meals with serenading musicians while we sipped our wine in outdoor cafes,…........there were fireworks at midnight……. It was magical.

Except for the ivy.

Bigger Really IS Better!!!!!!

Here is a must read from a photographer friend, Amy Ro. Amy is a maternity, newborn and family photographer based out of the Providence, RI area. I am sure you will relate to this article and next time you are not sure what to do.....GO BIGGER!!! You won't be sorry!

I was originally going to entitle this post “Go BIG or go home” but then realized that my friend Kristina had used that same title for a post earlier this year. So instead, it’s Bigger Really IS Better. Below you will see a photo of my lovely Christmas-decorated fireplace mantel. Totally normal sized fireplace that you would find in any house. What size do you think the photograph on the mantel is? 5×7? 8×10?

It’s actually an 11×14.

Seriously. Surprised? SO often people are hesitant to buy what they term “big photos” for their house. And my question is, simply, WHY?!?!?!?!! A lot of people believe an 8×10 photo is “big.” Here is what an 8×10 photo looks like on a normal sized mantel:

You’ll notice it’s pretty much dwarfed by the wall. It completely disappears in the grand scheme of things. 8×10 for a wall just doesn’t do it. In fact, an 8×10 is considered a desk portrait, not a wall one. At the very *minimum* if you are going to even consider putting a photo on your wall, you should go for an 11×14. And even then mat and frame it to a 16×20. And then put more than one of them up there. Below are three 11×14 photographs matted to 16×20 frames that I have hanging in my dining room (ignore the clutter, this was at the height of orders rolling in). I honestly wish that I had gone bigger. You’ll see that while the 16×20 size sounds big, on a big open wall, it still leaves a lot of space. (There is another two feet of wall space below the chair rail.) The only thing that helps to balance it a little which you can’t see is that I have three MORE of these hanging on the other walls. But I still wish I had gone one step bigger. The cluster of frames does help to absorb some space, however.

Here is a 16×20, equal to the framed prints above, back on the same mantel again by itself. Sounds big when you talk about it, but as you can see, it’s not when put into normal display surroundings.

Back to the point. When debating print sizes, if you are going to take the time and money to invest in a portrait session, why not have something truly wonderful to remember it by? One of my recent newborn clients got two 20×24 canvases for her walls and I think I seriously had to wipe off the drool when I opened them up. Sadly I did not take a photo of them, something I am still kicking myself for. But they were absolutely AMAZING. And I recently did a bigger display for the wall over my sofa. I did two 18×24 prints, two 16×24 prints and two 16×20s. Now you are probably saying those are HUMONGOUS!! (Admit it you’re saying that. I know you are!) Here is what they looked like all put together (and yes, that is my little monkey hiding behind the tableoh and please ignore the couch, came with the house and we haven’t gotten around to replacing it) :

I seriously totally and completely love walking into my living room now. I love seeing my kids up there big, it makes my heart smile. This is my family. The loves of my life. I love seeing them up on my wall. And notice that 16×20 (top left) which probably sounded big, how small it looks on a big wall over a full-sized couch. This post would have been much more effective had I put the photos on the same wall I have my display on, however I had already put the others up. To help imagine it, an 8×10 is less than 1/4 the size of the bottom center print. So here is a quick and dirty photoshop job of what that same space would look like with one print. On the left is an 11×14. On the right is an 8×10.

Oh and in case you were wondering what one of those “huge” prints looks like by itself (and, again, I know you were calling my prints huge, I just KNOW it) this is the 16×24 over the mantel:

So hopefully as you can see, it’s okay to go big. You don’t have to do a 20×24 (though I wish you would) but do consider at least one 16×20 from your session. Or a 16×20 framed by two 11×14s. If you absolutely insist on sticking with that 8×10 size, consider a grouping of six or eight of them together at least! Or matting it to an 11×14 size. If you want help and feel lost when considering wall displays for images from your session I am MORE than happy to draw up a wall display idea for you using your images. In fact when you get your proofs, I will send you a link to the wall display ideas that I have. And if you’d like, I can make suggestions for what to do. But the important part to get out of this is…

Bigger really IS better.

Whew!! That was fast! One minute we were in the midst of summer, and now, burrrr………2010!

NEW ARRIVAL
Well, perhaps the most exciting "Special Event" that occurred in 2009 is our own Rachelle gave birth to precious Elliana Sophia, a very welcome addition to their family. (she has 3 older brothers!)

Elliana has already had her first photo shoot, which will no doubt launch a successful modeling career. She knows how to work the camera. What a cutie pie!

Till things settle down for our busy mommy of four, Erin and I will be helping post McCaffrey Photography news and events. And there is never a shortage of activities to tell about in Erin’s life.

CLASS OF 2010
Our high school senior program was very active through summer and into the fall. Lots of kids coming and going, it’s always a very fun time of year! New faces, new friends and previous client’s little brothers and sisters, now all grown up. Erin continues to wow them with her cutting edge images!

IMAGENOMIC!
Always growing and changing, our shooting room/recording studio went through an image change. The wood ceiling and trim are now a dark chocolate, adding a dash of drama, and combined with some fun color and faux on the walls the space is more inviting than ever.

And as the décor of the studio grows and changes, so does the internal working system. Doing continuing education workshops and seminars has always been a priority at McCaffrey Photography and this year Imagenomic sent their rep, George to our studio to do a three day case study working with Erin on new post production techniques, innovative lighting and streamlining the workflow. George was a delight…..knowledgeable, hardworking, and VERY entertaining! Thanks George, we had a blast!

TRAVELIN' GIRL..…
Another big part of Erin’s career has been her active participation in the world of country music. In October the Oklahoma “Rodeo” Opry asked Erin to fly in to do a special 2- day headshot event photographing young artists for their portfolios. Being so close to Dallas, she combined the Opry event with a trip to do artists sessions for students attending Amanda Earhart Vocal Studios. Erin also had a blast photographing Amanda who is an awesome artist herself and is in the studio now working on her album.

And of course whenever Erin’s clients hear she’s coming to town, there are always requests for La Silhouette and family sessions.

Erin’s generous nature and love of photography is part of what makes her so popular. She wasn’t home for long when she traveled to the East coast to share some marketing/sales training techniques with fellow photographer, Mahlon Yeager, a long time friend from California. He is an incredible fashion photographer from LA and they plan on doing some projects together this year! Can’t wait to see what they do!

TENNESSEE HILLS
Between the trips, lots of things were going on at home in Franklin. We participated in a wonderful charity golf tournament benefiting Ashley’s Children, which focuses on educating and empowering youths between the ages of 16-19, in the foster care and juvenile justice system, to make a successful transition to responsible adulthood. We had a lot of fun being out on the course photographing the teams as they cruised by in their golf carts and capturing those “pro swings” at the tee! We made some new friends and were happy to do what we could to help raise funds for such a special charity.

Living in such a picturesque area, we do a lot of sessions outside, and this year an added a feature that we will be sure to continue were some kid sessions we call , “Cowboys with Butterscotch” and “Springtime Fairies”…..Too adorable to see the little one dressed for their sessions and posing for Erin.

For adults that want something more formal or somewhat edgy for their family sessions Erin has added an urban twist…..the look is a little different, from sophisticated to contemporary…, and it was so popular I am sure there will be much more of this style into next year!

DECK THE HALLS…
As the holidays approach, everything at McCaffrey Photography goes into high gear! It’s like a little North Pole. Our family sessions (in Franklin, Oklahoma City and Dallas) and Christmas card orders are always a last minute rush. Thankfully we have our office assistants and favorite elves, Jasmine and Heather, two of the sweetest girls ever, do lots of projects from cranking out order entries, to thank you notes, birthday greetings, mailings, gift packages and shipping.

We also have a new elf, Ashley Roy, as our in house retouch artist . Ashley’s calm demeanor and lovely smile, along with her skill and talent, has added an extra dimension to the quality portraiture we try to produce. You go girls! We couldn’t do it without you!!

Allessondra and the Chanel girls kicked off the season with their second portrait event at Cool Springs, Dillards. The ladies that participated were able to give a gift that lasts forever with beautiful portraits for their loved ones. We sometimes forget, creating a lovely portrait, (though we may be shy about sitting for the photographer), is not so much about us as subjects as it is about how much our family members love and cherish these wonderful gifts!

SUMMERTIME...AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY………………

Here we are in the middle of Tennessee’s legendary long, hot summer, but…but…, wait a minute! It’s not hot, or humid…no scorched grass, or dried up potted plants! We haven’t had such a cool and wet July since 1877!!

Rain or shine, hot or cool, Erin has been busy, busy, busy. In January Erin took her annual trip to AZ and she made the most of it! Although Erin and Penny always try to attend Imaging USA, the annual Professional Photographers Convention which was held this year in Phoenix, Erin took a few days to play like a vacationer and stayed at the trendy Hotel Indigo in Scottsdale. Known for her appetite for creature comforts, after two days Erin was on a first name basis with the entire room service staff. The convention was fab, as always, and on the final night three exhausted photographers, Erin, Penny and new friend, Faith Blessing, spent the evening enjoying a traditional Irish meal at, where else?....McCaffrey’s Irish Pub! (Must be a distant relative.) She didn’t vacation long though; her next step was Oklahoma City where she spent two weeks doing family sessions as well as the ever popular, La Silhouette Feminine.

ERIN ROCKS! FOR REAL!

In February Erin was back in Oklahoma, this time Tulsa, for an event that was dear to her heart. For those of you who don’t know about Erin’s history and her musical talent, she was the lead singer in her college band. They called themselves, The Jetsons, and became known as the hottest little band in Norman, OK. It was her love of music and performing that set her on the path to California in pursuit of a career in music.

The Jetsons held their first annual reunion concert on Valentine’s Day at the newly renovated Crown Plaza Hotel ballroom. What a Bash! Over 400 friends and fans celebrated those happy, carefree days of college life! This venue was a giant leap from the college scene they remembered. The Jetsons went all out for this event, a great stage and dance floor, spectacular sound and lighting, a cinematographer and photographer capturing everything to make it a Valentine weekend of a lifetime! OU and OSU graduates came in from all over the country in anticipation of seeing their favorite band and once the music started and Erin’s voice filled the room the crowd went wild! Transported for a few hours to “Back in the Day”…, the dancing was immediate and no one sat down the rest of the night. Everyone raved that it was the best party in years.…so it’s not surprising that this is the beginning of many more reunion concerts when, once again, Erin and The Jetsons become Rock Stars for their screaming fans!!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

Several weeks after the reunion Erin was back on the road….doing what she is now known for and does so well, portrait photography! Her three city event, Dallas, OKC, Tulsa was another great success with a very full schedule of senior, family and La Silhouette sessions. We feel so blessed to have so many clients that believe in us and recognize the joy and importance of having priceless portraiture to enjoy for decades to come.

In May, as our kickoff for our high school senior season, McCaffrey Photography taped its first television commercial on Fox for the popular local show, Tennessee Mornings. Five of our high school senior girls; Alexa Ferarri, Brentwood High, Morgan Jamesson, Paige High, Rachael Mathis, Independence, Madison Land, from Centennial and Mackenzie Campbell from Ravenwood were featured in the commercial which ran for 5 weeks. We had a drawing each week for first callers to win a complete senior package and the response to Register to Win was so enthusiastic we have decided to make it an ongoing thing. One of our favorite clients, Allesandra McKenzie, is such a fan of Erin’s beautiful portraiture that she invited McCaffrey Photography to a special event at Cool Springs to introduce some of her lovely Chanel customers to “La Silhouette”. The ladies that participated got so much more than they ever imagined! It was awesome what the Chanel and Dillards staff put together for them, they left feeling pampered and beautiful, and were delighted with Erin’s ease and professionalism. Throughout the past several months, McCaffrey Photography has had the pleasure of participating in some wonderful charity events in the greater Nashville area. Any time we can lend a hand to a cause in need, we do our very best to contribute. Here are some of the organizations/events that we participated in most recently.

"Hoot Scoot & Boogie" - All proceeds from this fundraiser will go right back into the school in the form of materials and equipment that directly benefit the student body of Oak View Elementary, Franklin.
The Gardner School - Monies raised benefit The Gardner School. "Jeans and Jewels" - While Junior Auxiliary of Franklin serves as an auxiliary to the community, working with the Boys & Girls Club, My Friends House and various community chest projects (Mercy Children’s Clinic), most of their fundraising revenue will go directly to our own projects, such as Coat of Many Colors and Shoes for Souls, providing individual school-age children with custom fit shoes and coats. Additionally, Junior Auxiliary works with individual families that need some extra help or have run out of resources in their commitment to have an on-going Child Welfare specific project, always keeping the welfare of the children as priority.
"Legacy Ball" - Monies raised at the gala go will fund services provided by the Williamson County Child Advocacy Center (WCCAC). Established in 2000, the Child Advocacy Center works to combat child abuse by coordinating services to child abuse victims and their families in crisis and by providing community education focused on prevention and early intervention.
"A Night for Visions" - a benefit for Visions Autism Center. Visions Autism Center is a non-profit organization started in 2007 by Executive Director Meshea James and her husband David. Meshea had a vision when she realized how limited educational options were for her 12-year-old autistic son. She decided to open a center for special needs children to provide what public school systems could not.
"Uncorking for Autism" - a benefit for Visions Autism Center.
"Singing for a Cause '09 - at Rocketown" - benefiting Ashley's Children. The mission of Ashley's Children is to educate and empower youths between the ages of 16-19, in the foster care and juvenile justice system, to make a successful transition to responsible adulthood. Their nine programs will teach them the introductory skills to prepare them for independent living in the Nashville and surrounding communities.

Rewind 2008!

Erin started 2008 with a bang by attending Spa Portrait Artists Convention with her mom, Penny McCaffrey, at Lowe's Ventana Canyon Luxury Resort in Tucson, Arizona. What a blast! Beautiful weather (in January), spectacular surroundings and talented photographers from all over the country were there. The place was buzzing with excitement as they went from one fabulous setting to another in an interactive environment learning the hottest trends in senior portrait photography! When they weren't shooting, cruising the aisles of the trade show, or taking notes during presentations by top people in the industry...(Jeff and Julia Woods, the Taufers, just to name a few)......there was the food!! The hotel featured the most beautiful outdoor buffets with a Southwestern theme. They were "wined and dined"!! The evenings in the hotel lobby were packed with everyone chatting and sharing ideas and portfolios....and Erin impressed many of her contemporaries when they saw her work. A big surprise for Erin was when she was asked to model for an award winning Canadian photographer, John Ratchford. And as the sun set that final evening they said their goodbyes knowing that friendships were made that would last for many years to come.

While everything was buzzing in Arizona, the Buzz for La Silhouette was spreading. The second year for the Valentine Portrait Event was booked to the max! The launch of La Silhouette Feminine series has been a big personal project for Erin. This incredible portrait opportunity explores the beauty of a woman from every aspect. Erin's exceptional creative talents allow her to capture the most stunning portraits of women of all shapes, sizes and ages in a beautiful artistic way creating fine art pieces that will be cherished. What a wonderful success this has been for Erin and the women she photographs....come be a part of this amazing experience! Do it for YOU...it gives you a confidence you didn't even know you had.

Erin feels blessed to be one of the most sought after photographers in the region. Traveling to several cities in the south/southwest to do special events has always been a big part of Erin's busy schedule. She has clients creating Buzz in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, and Phoenix. Each year she plans months in advance to meet the requests to do family, children, senior and La Silhouette sessions on the road.

Spring...
Talk about Buzz! Have you ever heard the sound, off in the distance, of teens talking about something or someone exciting?? Even before school was out for the summer our High School Senior program was already in full swing! Our teen reps were spreading the news and recruiting students for their Senior Pictures. McCaffrey Photography participated in the Jeep Giveaway Sweepstakes, a fantastic program sponsored by Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and once again the Buzz of Erin's unique style and attention to detail had the kids lining up! She always knows the hottest trends; she makes each senior feel special and really goes that extra mile to get the look they want. Ask any of them, they will tell you..."Erin Rocks"! Summer...
Our studio has a New Look!! McCaffrey Photography has continued to grow and change ....and our quaint little farm studio now has a slight European flair in the reception room which is something that Erin has wanted for a long time. Summer guest and farm helper, John Lindsley, on break from college, shared his remarkable talent as a painter and artist with a warm golden/amber faux finish on the walls. New wall displays and new furniture have been added making the atmosphere so inviting, everyone wants to spend time there!

And, we had another guest come to the farm last summer! "Butterscotch" is an adorable miniature horse who is a delight to all who come by to visit. Erin has created beautiful portraits of children spending time with Butter. He loves kids, petting and dog biscuits!!

Two years ago, when Erin was starting McCaffrey Photography, she attended a conference with her mom called "Imaging USA" held in Austin, TX. It was there she met a young female photographer she could really relate to. (They even had the same decorating/branding style!) It was after hearing Vicki Taufer speak that Erin knew she had found the right career path. Being so inspired Erin looked forward to someday attending "Haven", a workshop for photographers put on by the Taufer studio, VGallery in Morton, Ill. Each year Erin sets aside some time for continuing education and creative stimulation and summer 2008 she treated herself to the week long workshop, Haven. Here is what she had to say about her experience..."Attending Haven was a wonderful experience. I have always wanted to study under Vicki. It really was a thrill and I learned so much!"

Midst all the activity and workload for one little photographer, Erin was asked to photograph Dolly Parton live on stage! Yes, the amazing Dolly Parton!!! Erin and Penny were thrilled to be asked to shoot three of Dolly's shows. Dolly is such a phenomenal performer, and her gracious staff made the experience a pleasure. Then if that wasn't huge enough, Erin was asked to travel to Raleigh, SC to photograph Dolly and family for the South Mountain Resort Grand Opening. Erin, Penny, and Erin's grandmother (she was visiting from AZ at the time) flew to Raleigh...were picked up at the airport in a luxury limo and were treated like family! What a memorable experience it was for them!!

Somehow in that time frame Erin was able to squeeze a few sessions in Dallas, and one of the clients was an old friend from Erin's college days! To be able to reconnect with friends and share in their lives through photography is one of the spiffs of her business. That reconnect went to another level in '09......but that will be another story!

Fall...
No rest for Erin in the Fall!! This is the time our studio gears up for the busy season! Each year the Buzz grows about Erin and our country studio and more and more families are added, not just as clients, but as friends.....all booking appointments for their custom Holiday Greeting cards and family portraits. Every October, PPA sponsors "Family Portrait Month" to benefit the charity organization, Operation Smile. Founded in 1982, this children's charity is dedicated to treating facial deformities such as cleft lips and palates on children all around the world. It is a wonderful charity and we are so happy to be a part of it.

Winter...
With so many sessions booked in Oct and November there was much to be done and it's a mad dash to have all the portraits packed and delivered as gifts under Christmas trees or shipped off to family and friends far away. And then...and only then......Erin (and Mirabella) could take time to get cozy and relax in front of the fireplace.

But only for a moment or two.....because it was almost Christmas! Guests were coming, there was last minute shopping to do, and of course......when Erin’s family and friends gather for some Holiday Cheer someone would say....."Erin, where's your camera? We must get a picture of this"!

Yipee! We couldn't be happier that our McCaffrey Photography Blog is up and running! We also want to share how fortunate we are to have Rachelle Sipkovsky on board with McCaffrey Photography. As an energetic and creative force she is a multi-talented addition who fits perfectly into our close knit family studio. We love her and don't know how we ever survived without her!!! Rachelle is heading up the sales and marketing part of our studio, and is designing all of our promotional pieces and our custom cards and announcements. She also has now agreed to take on our Blog to keep you all updated on what's new with Erin and McCaffrey Photography! And what a year it has been! Stay tuned as she is preparing "REWIND 2008".....you may be surprised by all that we have been up to!
